Data Insights & Design Rationale
Trends & Caveats: When switching between 'New Cases' and 'New Vaccinations', you may notice inverse trends in certain periods (e.g., cases dropping as vaccinations rise). However, it is crucial to remember that correlation does not equal causation. Drops in cases can also be heavily influenced by lockdowns, seasonality, or reporting fatigue.
Design Choices:
Handling Outliers: To prevent extreme data spikes (often caused by backlogged administrative reporting) from squashing the rest of the visual data, values were capped at the 99th percentile during the data cleaning phase.
Rolling Averages: Because daily/monthly health data is inherently noisy, I included 3-month rolling average options in the metric toggle. This smooths out reporting artifacts and allows users to see the true underlying trend.
Color & Layout: The interface uses a clean, high-contrast palette to ensure accessibility. The line chart defaults to a crisp blue (`#3498db`), avoiding reds and greens which can cause issues for colorblind users.
